Editorial Work Experience, Sport 2018

Guardian News and Media (GNM) offers a limited number of short editorial experience opportunities throughout the year to those dedicated to a career in journalism. These placements at the Guardian and Observer are unpaid, voluntary and range in duration from a few days to a maximum of two weeks. Also due to high volume of response please only apply to 1 work experience scheme, duplicate applications to multiple work experience schemes will be disqualified.

The aim of a placement is to help you acquire a greater understanding of how a multi-platform news organisation works. This may be achieved in a range of ways, from shadowing a journalist to getting involved in editorial activities where possible. Above all it’s a chance to gain a close-up insight and to ask questions as part of your learning and development.

To be considered for a placement you must be at least 18, an EEA resident with the right to work or train in the UK and able to demonstrate a genuine interest in journalism – for example, serious involvement in student journalism, substantial work experience on local/specialist media, or an impressive personal website or blog. The aim of the scheme is to introduce aspiring journalists to an editorial environment. For this reason we regret that professional journalists are not eligible to apply for these placements. Those who have received a placement at GNM in the previous 24 months are not eligible.

On the application you will be asked about your previous experience and when you are available to spend time with us. Please note that demand is greatest during academic holidays and during these times we give priority to students from our Scott Trust Bursary Scheme and the Positive Action Scheme, so it may help if you can be flexible with your availability.

Experience placements are available to many areas of our Editorial department. Applicants can only submit one application for one work placement. Each category has specific application requirements so do think carefully about the one most relevant and of benefit to your skills and ambitions.

The Guardian sports desk is always busy, and the next year will be no different. Whether your specialist subject is an Ashes series, the Premier League, a football World Cup, Wimbledon or the Six Nations we will cover them all this year and always need a helping hand in the office to put together seven papers a week and our award-winning website.

We require work experience candidates on a two week placement rolling basis who are available at any period over the course of 2018.
